The Empty Tomb Miracle: Moving past Our Silence and Our Fear

1 When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they might go to anoint Jesus’ body. 2 Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb 3 and they asked each other, “Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb?” 4 But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away. 5 As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed.  6 “Don’t be alarmed,” he said. “You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him. 7 But go, tell his disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.'” 8 Trembling and bewildered, the women went out and fled from the tomb. They said nothing to anyone, because they were afraid.

QUOTES FOR REFLECTION

Let no one grieve at his poverty, for the universal kingdom has been revealed.  Let no one mourn that he has fallen again and again; for forgiveness has risen from the grave.  Let no one fear death, for the Death of our Savior has set us free. He has destroyed it by enduring it.                  John Chrysostom, ca. 400 B.C. Church Father

The waters are rising, but so am I. I am not going under, but over.

Catherine Booth, co-founder of the Salvation Army

Christ’s risen life has already intruded into death’s domain and reigns in a sense already so that the days of death’s reign are now numbered. The evil dragon of the Apocalypse knows that his time is short (Rev. 12:12).                          Frank D. Macchia, Vanguard University

The greatest negative in the universe is the Cross, for with it God wiped out everything that was not of Himself: the greatest positive in the universe is the resurrection, for through it God brought into being all. Watchman Nee, Church Leader

Jesus Christ did not come into this world to make bad people good; He came into this world to make dead people live.                Lee Strobal, Investigative Journalist
When the drama of history is over, Jesus Christ will stand alone on the stage. All the great figures of history … will realize that they have been but actors in a drama produced by another.                Helmut Thielicke, Pastor and Theologian
